Queen Charlotte Islands ~ Kayak Mothership For thousands of years the Queen Charlotte Islands lay secure in their isolation, protected by the sea, even from the ice that swept south to cover most of the continent. Because of their isolation these islands gave birth to many unique kinds of animals and plant life. About 10,000 years ago some newcomers penetrated their isolation arriving by sea or being created by the Raven, they were transformed into people, as unique as their environment ~ The HAIDA. The Canadian Galapagos ~ Haida Gwaii is a remote archipelago that has captured the world's interest for it's unique array of plants and animals. More than sixteen hundred kilometers of coastal shoreline provide habitat for a diversity of marine inter tidal life. Whales, porpoises, seals, and over half of BC's sea lion population thrive in these plankton rich waters. The area supports a large percentage of the nesting sea birds . Bald eagle densities unparalleled anywhere else in Canada. The world's largest black bears and a unique pine marten are among the seven land mammals found on the Queen Charlotte Islands that show evolutionary distinctions from those on the mainland. Territory of the RAVEN, FOAM WOMAN, KILLER WHALE, SACRED- ONE- BOTH- STANDING-STILL AND MOVING, STONERIBS and a host of other supernatural beings feature in the cultural achievements of the HAIDA. Today some four hundred Haida archaeological sites are found, including the world's largest array of totem poles still standing in their natural setting at Ninstints on Anthony Island, now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Site.
