Ship and Shipmates The ROLANO is an extremely safe and comfortable vessel. Originally built in Sweden (approx. 65 years ago), she was brought to BC in 1977 and was used in the commercial fishing industry as a packer. In the mid 1990's with the downturn of the fishing industry the ROLANO was converted from packing fish to a passenger vessel certified with Transport Canada to carry 12 overnight passengers and 40 daytime passengers. She is fully equipped with the latest safety and navigational equipment. Accommodations are spacious and comfortable. Two private (sight and sound) and three semi-private (sight) cabins provide sleeping accommodation."No curtains' divide our sleeping accommodations. All rooms have doors which can be locked for privacy. Two heads (bathrooms) with hot showers, large deck space and salon~ library~ lounge for out the of weather relaxing and viewing. This room is perfect, for 12 guests to enjoy sunset cruises, relaxation and camaraderie as we travel to our next destination, with a glass of wine, appies and delicious meals prepared by our full time cook. An extensive library found in the salon covers topics such as First Nation's History, Marine biology, flora and fauna, ornithology, bear viewing, areas we travel some novels and more! The ship is equipped with a laptop computer with DVD capability, and all the amenities of home (coffee maker, microwave, CD player, fridges, freezers and more) ROLANO is fully inspected and certified by Transport Canada as a passenger vessel, and is run by a certified, competent crew.
Take a break from the vessel by getting ashore, giving yourself a chance to explore with the freedom afforded by an outboard inflatable and kayaks. A unique feature about the ROLANO is that she is approved with Tourism British Columbia as an approved accommodation (Bed and Breakfast) and with Vancouver Island Health Authority as a Food Safe Excellence restaurant facility serving Sushi Friday and Saturday evenings while the vessel is at home port in Sooke. Dinner is served in the salon~library~lounge and is often done while cruising to our next destination. Enjoy freshly prepared seafood's, pastas, sushi and more!
Greg Fox is your resident engineer who keeps all aspects of ROLANO operating. He looks after all technical gear including zodiacs and kayaks. This is Greg's third season aboard the ROLANO. He is an experienced marine engineer working with in the industry on a variety of projects. Greg can also be seen at the wheel, taking over for the Captain. Greg's knowledge of the vessel is superior. A great people person, Greg's sense of humor will keep you in stitches. A musician as well, Greg will delight you with his guitar and singing ability. Kari Osselton, office manager/cook maintains the office and will be the person to answer any questions you may have regarding our expeditions. Joining you on select trips, Kari creates some delicious west coast cuisine. Using only the freshest ingredients, your meals will add highlight to your expedition. During her time on board, Kari also has a wealth of knowledge in the areas that we travel. Join Kari in a sushi making lesson, and then a night of Sake and Sushi on board the ROLANO.
