The Discovery Islands are a chain of 6,000 islands that shelter the BC Coastline between Washington and Alaska. Located between Campbell River and Mainland BC, the Discovery Islands have some of the most intricate waterways and some of the most amazing scenery in the world. Experience easy waters, sheltered bays and pristine scenery. The waterways between the islands were carved to great depths by glaciers during the last ice age. Share these waters with seals, porpoise and whales.
The moment you board the ROLANO to make the short crossing to Quadra Island the pace relaxes and all the stresses of the city fade away. Enjoy freshly prepared snacks by our full time cook, as we motor across from one island to the next. Surrounded by snowcapped mountains and turbulent tidal water, this area is one of the most scenic settings in coastal BC. Local communities are friendly, rich in First Nations culture and pioneer history. Along the waters edge you may find searching for petroglyphs, is a nice way to spend an afternoon. Joy Inglis' s new book Spirit of Stone is a guide to the Islands ancient rock art.
The farther north we travel in the Strait of Georgia, the fewer travelers we encounter. Alone in a vessel with only eight other participants, you will enjoy the romance of the ocean. The Discovery Island Group were once heavily populated with fishing and logging camps, surprisingly more so than today. Evidence of these can be found in abandoned cabins, ancient villages and overgrown logging roads. Nowhere else on the BC coast is there a more pristine environment for boating activity. Travelers from around the world come to the Discovery Island Group to experience the easy access, sheltered waters and amazing scenery of the Discovery archipelago. Tidal Currents around Quadra Island are notorious for their strength, particularly at Surge Narrows on the east and Seymour Narrows on the west.
