Bike/Kayak/Cruise Canadian Gulf Islands

Lying off the coast of British Columbia are a jewel of islands boxed together to make up the Canadian Gulf Islands. Famous for their breathtaking scenery, arts and crafts, hiking, cycling, kayaking and sailing, these islands are sheltered in the Strait of Georgia and for centuries have been a favorite cruising ground for sailors who have enjoyed these sheltered waters, although sometimes rough enough to challenge even the experts.kayakersintheislands

The Gulf Islands enjoy less than 30 inches of rainfall per year. Cruising around these islands are very pleasant, with many sheltered bays and inlets. An amazing area of the British Columbia Coast line you are able to relax, cycle, kayak, hike and fish. Lying in the shadow of the Olympic Mountains the Gulf Islands have the most temperate weather in Canada. The climate is listed as semi-mediterranean and some species of plant life normally associated with California are found here.

Unplug, relax and unwind. The islands people and lifestyle moves at a slower pace than you may be accustom to. Walk through lush green forests, rolling meadows and along winding country roads, miles of sandy beaches, paddle along rocky shorelines. At night we anchor in a protected bay or cove and enjoy the camaraderie of newly found friends. Conversations of the days activity, dinner, and a game of 'horse race' bring closure to the day. Enjoy the Coast Salish nations way of life with guests from Kuper Island sharing their stories and traditions.

Eagles, cormorants, loons, herons, whales, seals and dolphins are common in the islands.

rolano_and_support_vesselSpring in the Gulf Islands brings some amazing events. So bring along your binoculars and scan for jumping salmon, soaring eagles and gulls, rafts of cormorants, ducks and pods of orca whales feeding on millions of herring during their spawn. Transient Orcas are attracted to the food sources around the islands including seals, providing an easy hunt and a delicious food source. Close to shore you may spot a family of sea otters, or even a curious seal swimming through the strands of bull kelp. On the shore, we search the tide pools, natural aquariums that we study at low tide. The best tides are known as spring tides occurring at intervals around the year. These retreat to the lowest levels, providing the best access to life not seen above the water.

Away from the Pacific Ocean, the meadows and country roads are blanketed seals_resting with an array of wildflowers, Garry Oak meadows, Arbutus Trees, dominant coniferous trees, and fresh spring breezes. Under the shelter of oak canopies or in meadows, spring wildflowers, grasses, mosses, and a variety of shrubs flourish.

We spend five days in this archipelago, leaving behind video games, night clubs and movie theatres as these islands become our television set, with memories to last a lifetime.
